The Voice That Says 'You're Okay, Right Now'

Right now, you’re feeling it — that tight knot in your stomach when you think about treating yourself. You might be scrolling through Instagram or just sitting at home, and suddenly the fear is there: what if I can't afford this? What if I'm a failure for wanting something nice?

Let’s break this down.

First things first: where are you right now? Really, in your body — you’re probably sitting somewhere. You’re breathing. The sky might be grey or blue outside your window. You’re safe. That panic you feel? It isn’t happening to you at this second. It’s a thought about what could happen if you spend money on yourself.

The number in your head, that balance figure — it means nothing until you decide what it does mean. Right now, it’s just digits. But you’ve bolted onto those digits some scary story: “what if I’m out of cash?” or “I can’t afford to take care of myself.” The panic isn’t the number; it’s that fear-laden tale.

Now, whose voice is telling you that? Was there someone in your life who taught you that spending on yourself was a sin? That you’re not worth it? It could be a parent or an ex, but it’s probably just the culture around us. We’ve all been taught by a million messages to feel bad about spending money on ourselves.

But here’s what matters: none of that story is yours. No one gets to tell your story for you — and no one ever said it was true. That fear has an origin, but its grip doesn’t need to last forever. It’s a recording playing inside your head — you can turn the volume down or off.

So here’s what you do: sit with that thought about spending money. Feel how it makes your stomach churn and your heart race. Then shift gears. Look around again — are you safe? Are you breathing fine? The number isn’t happening to you right this second. What is, is the panic itself.

But you know what’s actually true?

You have enough right now to be okay. Not just some distant future version of yourself when the bank account hits a certain balance — but right here, right now. You are fine in your room, with the number on the screen and the fear whispering in your ear.

And that is freeing. When you’re panicking about money, it’s easy to get stuck thinking: “what if I can’t afford my life?” But what if instead you think: “I’m okay right now.” It doesn’t mean you’ll never have financial challenges — but it means the challenge isn’t happening this second.

It’s your story. You’re allowed to rewrite it, because no one owns that panic. It got installed somewhere along the way, and only you can take it out.

That's the exit.

The panic is a loop until you break it. And you break it by seeing the fear for what it is: not real right now — just a story your brain made up about something far off in time that isn’t here yet. So let yourself see clearly, and then tell yourself another story — one where you’re enough.
